I've been trying to think up an acronym for the 9 chemicals you really just...must...have to, avoid. Chemicals that have been linked to health concerns such as asthma, allergies, even cancer. Unfortunately, my mommy brain is not coming up with a good order that also spells out a word you can remember easily. Perhaps your brain is working better than mine? I'm looking for something like "SMOG" which I learned in drivers education. (You remember, Signal, Mirror, Over the Shoulder, Go if Clear.)
As such, here is a quick list of ingredients to avoid, followed by the products in which they most commonly hide. If you have any ideas for an acronym, please let me know so we can all share in your brain power! Otherwise, print this out and when you can, opt for products without these ingredients:
- Dioxane 1,4: Shampoo, body wash, lotions
- Acetone: Nail polish, nail polish remover, hairspray
- Ammonia: Hair color
- Ceteareth: Lotion, hair conditioner, tanner, hair dye
- Formaldehyde: Cosmetics
- Parabens: Cosmetics, lotion, cream, facial cleanser, hand soap, hair conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant
- Phthalates: Shampook lotion, nail polish, soft plastics
- Propylene glycol: Cream, hair gel, fragrances
- Sodium Laureth/Lauryl sulfate: Shampoo, soap, bubble bath, toothpaste.
Feeling inspired? I can't wait to hear from you!
