The Great Outdoors: A One Week Course in Behavior Change

I just had the privilege of spending 6 days in the glorious upper meadows of Yosemite National Park. From the relative comfort of canvas tent cabins, my family was able to enjoy the great outdoors with daily hiking, pristine countryside, camaraderie, and bears. Yes, bears. The threat of bears was everywhere, from the entrance to the enormous park, to the initialing of the statement at the bottom of the sign-in sheet at the lodge desk, to the signs posted all over the grounds… Continue

Just a Quick One...

Lately, I've heard from several people asking about simple things they can do to make a difference - not expensive things like solar panels, Toyota Priuses - but what they can do NOW. These are questions I love, because one can start now, simply, easily, no investment, just a simple behavior change. Easy, hard, it's your call...

Shop for things that aren't packaged -in the veggie/fruit section, bulk bins, etc. Bring your old plastic produce bags, plastic margarine… Continue

Idle Time: The Not-So-Good Kind

We all do it, whenever we are in our cars, without even noticing or thinking about it. I did (or didn't) do the same, until Jennifer Duckworth, a mom in New Jersey and former EPA policy writer, clued me in to what a lot of damage a little idling adds up to.

In Support of (really) Local Agriculture

My last blog post on my garden adventures made a reference to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and one reader has already inquired. So as to not leaving anyone hanging, here is a tale of a successful, very local small farm, in the heart of surburbia... In my on-going quest to provide some of my own food, but support local growers and our community's economy, I made a recent visit to Draper Farms, located in San Anselmo, California. The… Continue

Abundant Harvest, Beginner Style

Garden Update, Day 32

I wanted to share a photo of today's harvest of our humble patch. Each item has a story to tell. It is not the first harvest, since the lettuces came and went already - too much shade, and now too hot in the California summer. But today is the first day that I really got a chance to take it in, to really see it, as I was letting everything dry after rinsing off the dirt. I harvested earlier today, yet it was only later, when I… Continue

new site is rockin', chrise--can't imagine how hard you all worked for the revamp but it is well worth it. much more intuitive, interactive, inviting. Heather and I will post regular reminders to the SMMC group about the new site and new membership op.

Just got the Aug issue of InStyle--congratulations on the traction EcoMom is gaining!

still back east, on martha's vineyard until end of august. am getting sand in my laptop, writing on the beach most days. lots of time on my hands for an EcoMom project :) seriously, throw anything my way! Also, i'm always encountering cool products--who is heading up R&D?

We plan to host our second local gathering after Labor Day--will keep you posted. . .
