EcoMom Founder and President

First and foremost I am mom, momma or MOMMMMMY! depending on what my son Corbin needs. He is my inspiration and the wind beneath my wings. As far as EcoMom goes, well, my background in sustainability began at an early age with a Hungarian born mother and a father who works with indigenous elders around the world. All of my work has thus been imbued with a sense of stewardship and global interconnection and I have long been inspired to create positive change by bringing together people who would not otherwise meet. I believe in following one’s dreams and have faith in our collective creativity and ingenuity.

I went on my first Native American based Vision Quest at the age of thirteen and quickly learned that once one receives a vision, it is pretty darn bad not to step up. So when the vision for EcoMom came to me several months after co-producing an event for the United Nations World Environment Day in June of 2006 what else could I do but forge ahead? As a single mom, many would say I was crazy to start a non-profit organization, but it felt like I had no other option. After facing a medley of fears – Could I do it? How would I pay my bills in the process? Who was I to believe I could make something like this happen? - I sent out a little email to family and friends sharing my idea and based on an overwhelmingly positive response, officially launched EcoMom in the Fall of that same year. I still work out of my little home office (what was once the laundry room, before I started line drying out on the deck) but this little vision has now become a worldwide movement with EcoMom Leaders in communities from Mumbai to Minneapolis, and we've recently launched a partnership with EcoMom, Inc. in response to repeated requests for an EcoMom Market.

I still have many fears and feel a sense of awe and wonder every day as EcoMom continues to evolve. Yes, this is about the climate crisis and it is about creating a sustainable future, and yes, of course I want to help save the polar bears and reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals but above all, I want my son, and all of our children, to grow up with a sense of connection to one another - to the web of life of which we are a part - and to have access to the life changing lessons that nature has provided humanity since the beginning of time.

By coming together as EcoMoms, we not only make our own days more purpose-driven and joyful, we help to create a legacy of which we can be proud. I dream of one day sharing this story- the story of a time in history that demanded we step up and we did – with my grandchildren. I hope you will share this dream so that you may one day proudly tell your grandchildren about what we did together.

With hope and love,
Kimberly

food Like most US citizens, I am a product of the American Dream. My Hungarian grandparents escaped the 1956 Revolution, and waited anxiously in an Austrian refugee camp until they had passed the requisite medical, political, and literacy tests to be allowed…

How's Your Ride?

In nary a child-rearing book, are there warnings about the large role transportation plays in motherhood. Though I should have guessed it from the days of my own childhood - in which my mother and father would drive 90 minutes round trip from our home in the country, five days a week, to support my passionate commitment to a life in ballet - becoming a mother really means becoming a chauffeur as well. From the grocery store to pre-school, to grade school, soccer,… Continue

Last Minute Green Dinner for St. Patrick's Day

In case you are harriedly trying to come up with something green for dinner tonight, here's my super easy, quick, cheap, yummy solution to your challenge:

Cook 1 package organic pasta according to Directions

In saute pan combine 2 cloves fresh garlic, 3 tablespoons water, 4 tablespoons olive oil (make sure to add water before oil or you risk hot oil splashing), 2 leaves fresh mint or cilantro, two cups whatever green vegetable you have at home - broccolli, peas, kale,… Continue

Chemicals to Avoid...And where they're hiding

I've been trying to think up an acronym for the 9 chemicals you really just...must...have to, avoid. Chemicals that have been linked to health concerns such as asthma, allergies, even cancer. Unfortunately, my mommy brain is not coming up with a good order that also spells out a word you can remember easily. Perhaps your brain is working better than mine? I'm looking for something like "SMOG" which I learned in drivers education. (You remember, Signal, Mirror, Over the Shoulder, Go if… Continue
